ABOUT THE PAGEANT

Developed by the Liberian United Women in Progress (L.U.W.I.P.), a non-profit, non political community based resource group headquartered in Philadelphia, PA, The Miss Liberia in the U.S. Scholarship Pageant was born out of the need to create a forum for young women of Liberian decent here in the United States to embrace and promote their culture, express their talent, beauty, and accomplishments.Hundreds of thousands of Liberians found themselves here in the United States fleeing almost 20 years of civil unrest that nearly destroyed our beloved country, and took the lives of over 500,000 of its citizens. The Miss Liberia in the U.S. Scholarship Pageant first took center stage in July of the year 2001, and has remained an annual tradition and the main attraction of our independence celebration in Philadelphia, PA. The pageant, now in its tenth year, is attracting corporate sponsorship from all across the United States.Today, the Miss Liberia in the U.S Organization is even more passionate about community service and education and is making significant strides in these directions. Our goal is to develop women who seek to improve the lives of others, as well as achieve their personal goals. Under the leadership of The Liberian United Women in Progress (LUWIP), the Miss Liberia in the U.S Organization is partnering with community based groups to continue to give Liberia a voice right here in the United States. Because of these and many other endeavors, Miss Liberia in the U.S. is goal-oriented, career savvy, and a beautiful young woman. She is culturally aware, charismatic, spiritually sentient, educated, and intelligent; and all of these characteristics are personified in her everyday life.The organization continues to grow rich in history and social significance as we work to rebuild and promote a positive image of our beloved Liberia and at the same time propagate the UNITY that is necessary for the development of a vibrant Liberian community abroad and at home(in Liberia). Miss Liberia in the U.S. 2011 - Miss Lawdia Gilda Kennedy

I am a young Christian woman who enjoys being a daughter and the oldest of four girls. I am very committed to my faith and have a great love for sports and reading, as well as writing. I currently work as a Secretary at my local church, Bethel Atlanta and as a substitute teacher. I have been blessed with the gift of singing and have done so since the age of seven. My platform is titled Liberia’s W.O.M.B.B. (Women Organized Mobilized and Breaking Boundaries). My greatest goal and desire is to reach out to young Liberian women and help them discover the queen and champion within. According to a popular proverb, “Give a man (or woman) a fish and you feed her for a day. Teach her how to fish and you feed her for a lifetime.”. I want to see the lives of Liberian women fulfilled through education, planning, and strategic creative ideas. I am laid back yet I always strive for excellence. I have a passion for people. I believe that no matter where I go, it is people who make life’s journey special. At the end of the day, I want to be of service to my nation and to my people. I want to give back to my nation by making myself available to work at any level. I am grateful to know that the Miss Liberia pageant is a step I am taking in the right direction. The Liberian United Women in Progress' (LUWIP) mission is to impact and empower our community through meaningful multi-cultural, educational, and social initiatives. Some of the commnity based programs we coordinate each year are listed below. Our queens are active participants helping to give back to their community.

Back to School

Every year in September, LUWIP hosts our Annual Back to School Funfest for families in the community. This event is a fun filled day with back to school themed events and activities for the entire family. The highlight of the day is the school supplies giveaway, serving at more than 200-300 school-aged children. LUWIP ensures that every child (usually ages 4-18) at the funfest leaves with a school bag filled with school supplies(including backpacks, notebooks, calculator, writing instruments, planners, etc) to help jump-start the school year.

Toys for Tots

Every year in December (December 19th this year), LUWIP hosts our Annual Toys for Tots Giveaway to provide new toys and share the joy of Christmas with less fortunate children. Started in 2005, we are fortunate to service more than 300 children and giveaway over 600 toys each year during our giveaway. We offer a meal for the families that come out, a Christmas Story-telling segment for the kids and fun games. This year, we would also like to grant each kid a pair of winter gloves, scarf, and hat to keep them warm this winter.

Elder's Appreciation Dinner

Every year in late November, LUWIP hosts our Annual Elders Appreciation Dinner to honor the senior members in our community. This years event will be on Sunday, November 21st. It is a huge part of our cultural tradition to show the elders in the community the utmost respect. We believe that teaching children respect for others is fundamental to their growth as young, law-abiding citizens. By learning to respect their elders, children will be more inclined to listen to advice coming from this vastly untapped source of wisdom.We also host a Thanksgiving Food Drive to collect turkeys and canned goods to prepare food baskets for the elders and also those families in need. Often times our senior citizens who come to the U.S. feel out of place and may feel neglected. This event is a time to show them they are still very important to us and we value them.
